Lensky, Hayyim: (1905-42)

Russian Hebrew poet. He was born in Slonim, a district of Grodno in Russia, and lived in Moscow and Leningrad. In Moscow he wrote poems which he sent to literary periodicals in Palestine. Later he was sentenced to imprisonment in Siberia for writing in Hebrew, but in 1937 he was transferred to a forced-labour camp near the Soviet-Mongolian border. Although he returned to Leningrad on his release, he was again arrested; he is assumed to have died in captivity. His poetry describes his childhood and Siberian exile as well as his faith in the Jewish people.
